Through some simple manipulation, I discovered that my blog is read by very few people who can be bothered to answer a simple question. A friend in need is a friend in the comments!
All right. Bread soup is a traditional Baltic dish, a dessert. Wikipedia tells us, “Bread soup is based on rye bread baked with sweetening enzyme additives (malt, molasses).”
The bread is then made into rusks and tossed into boiling water with sugar or honey. Once it has cooled completely, cream, fruit, and anything else you like are added.
The taste and consistency are unusual, but many people like it, myself included. The dish is very high in calories, so it is best not to overindulge.
I asked because I had never thought before about it being our traditional dish, or about the fact that people from other countries had never even heard of it. I find this surprising because it is simple and accessible to everyone. If you are ever in our region - give it a try.
Or just crush some rusks, add sugar, simmer them in boiling water for 5-8 minutes, let them cool, and serve garnished with cream. That is the entire recipe.
